Niigata | The Echigo Tsumari Art Triennale

Pioneer of regional art festivals in the Echigo Tsumari region

The Echigo Tsumari Art Triennale is a massive international art festival that occurs every three years. A pioneer of regional art festivals in Japan, ETAT is unique in that it is spread across the gorgeous Satoyama landscape in the Echigo-Tsumari region, part of Niigata prefecture. The first festival took place in 2000 and the next is scheduled for summer 2021. A central concept of the festival is that human beings are part of nature. There are over 200 exhibitions, including the permanent installations “Tsumari in Bloom” by Yayoi Kusama and “House of Light” by James Turrell. In addition to the main event every three years, visitors can participate in the seasonal exhibitions and events of “Echigo-Tsumari Art Field” during the different seasons of the year. Some artworks also serve as lodgings, like the “Dream House” by Marina Abramović. With the Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennale, art isn’t just once every three years —it’s all around us every day.
