Learn about SABA（Mackerel） at Tagarasu in Obama
Obama is less than two hours by train from Kyoto and is an enchanting coastal destination facing Wakasa Bay in Fukui Prefecture on the north side of Kyoto. Wakasa Obama in ancient times was called “Miketsukuni” which means the food supplier to the imperial coats in Nara and Kyoto. The Saba Kaido (the mackerel route) were several paths through which food was transported from Obama to Kyoto. Tagarasu in Obama is the Birthplace of the Saba Kaido since mackerel was the most transported food. To learn more about mackerels, go on a fishing boat ride for feeding special aquafarm Saba (mackerel) and the mackerel with the nick-name Yopparai Saba (drunk-mackerel) raised with sake lees. You can also learn about the preserved fermented mackerel called Heshiko with an explanation by a unique Heshiko master. Make sure to try the drunk-mackerel for lunch!
