South of mainland Kagoshima, the islands of the Amami Archipelago are blessed with rich ocean life, thanks to the Kuroshio current that flows alongside the region. In the summer, locals and visitors alike enjoy taking a dip in the crystal-clear ocean of Amami Oshima to experience the stunning reef life under the sea. Many coral reefs are mere meters from the beach, and snorkeling spots differ even between the northern and southern areas of the island. First-time snorkelers have a variety of guided snorkeling tours to choose from, but more experienced swimmers should inquire with a tourism information center or with staff at their accommodation before setting out in the ocean on their own. Make sure to bring coral reef-safe sunscreen or a rash-guard as well to avoid a sunburn!
