Engyoji Temple
Live the life of a Buddhist monk in a mountain top temple
A cable car to the top of Mt. Shosha will whisk you away from the modern world and into the ancient mountain forest that conceals Engyoji Temple. This breathtaking temple complex offers temple stays so you can sample a simple monastic lifestyle, unchanged since the founding of the temple in 966.
Try Zen meditation in the idyllic calmness of the Jogyo-do Hall. Focus your mind by practicing calligraphy under the guidance of a Buddhist monk in the Cho-do, a wooden planked hall rich with the aroma of sumi ink and delicate incense. You can witness a dedication ceremony and swordsmanship demonstration in the open space between the temples that served as a filming location for The Last Samurai. Dine on a traditional meal of Shonin Ryori, vegetarian Buddhist cuisine, before retiring for the evening in one of the temple's rooms.
