Shiretoko Nature Cruise
See this remote UNESCO World Heritage Site from the deck of a wildlife cruise
This UNESCO World Heritage site has a rich ecosystem that stretches from the top of the mountains to below the sea. It's home to brown bears, Yezo deer, whales, dolphins, and countless species of birds. Its remoteness has left it untouched by humans for generations — if you head north from Shiretoko, your next stop is Russia.
In the summer months, book a boat tour of the waters surrounding the park — sperm whales, minke whales, beaked whales, and several kinds of porpoises come south from the Arctic to feed in the rich waters surrounding Hokkaido. In winter, the cruises dodge ice flows to spot seals and birds. Once back on land, head to a hot spring to warm up in volcanically heated warm water — there are several options not far from the harbor.
