Cherry Blossom Viewing Tour in Tohoku

Recommended season

DAY 1

It takes about 1.5 hours by train from Morioka Station to Hiraizumi Station, and a 5-minute cab ride to Chusonji Temple. A pilgrimage to a UNESCO World Heritage Site, surrounded by cherry blossoms. In the afternoon, after checking into a hotel near Morioka Station, head to Kitakami Tenshochi Park, where the 2km-long rows of cherry blossom trees are a sight to behold. The cherry blossom festival is held from mid-April to early May. The night illumination of the rows of cherry trees reflected on the surface of the river is a must-see.

DAY 2

Move to the shore of Lake Tazawa and enjoy canoeing. The crystal clear emerald blue water will refresh your mind. Enjoy the fresh greenery and sky from the lake. Afterwards, you will take a train to Kakunodate, a famous cherry blossom viewing spot, also known as the Little Kyoto of Michinoku (Tohoku). The scene of weeping cherry petals dancing on the elegant buildings is as beautiful as art.

DAY 3

After checking out of the hotel in Morioka, take a 2-hour bus ride to Odate to meet its famous Akita dogs. You will be greeted by the adorable dogs at Akitainu No Sato in front of the station. After souvenir shopping, visit the local farm to harvest vegetables and try making kiritanpo, a local dish made by wrapping freshly cooked rice using a wooden stick and baking it. Spend a night there and have fun interacting with the locals!

DAY 4

On your last day in Tohoku, take the train from Odate Station to Hirosaki Station to participate in the Hirosaki Cherry Blossom Festival held in Hirosaki Park. There are 50 varieties of cherry blossoms to view, including Someiyoshino trees that are over 100 years old. The moat around the castle is painted pink, and the carpet of cherry petals is the highlight. As many as 200 stands are available at the festival site, where you can enjoy sweets and local delicacies.
