History of Sunamushi Onsen
Ibusuki City in Kagoshima Prefecture is famous for its Hot Spring of Beauty called the “Sunamushi Onsen.” This natural steam sand bath along the shoreline of Ibusuki is known for its healing properties as it can relieve headaches, rheumatism, asthma, and inflammation, among other health conditions. This is not your ordinary onsen as it involves covering your body, while dressed in yukata, with warm sand. The warm temperature is due to the spring water that gushes out underneath the sand. This activity takes about 15 to 20 minutes.
Aside from its health benefits, it’s also considered a beauty treatment as it helps detoxify by sweating, making the skin feeling refreshed. Sand-bathing’s health benefits are proven by science, and this relaxing health activity is known to have existed for 300 years now.
