Go Ice Fishing Amidst the Gorgeous Snowscapes of Mt. Akagi

A hands-on smelt fishing experience perfect for outdoor enthusiasts and foodies alike!

Climb Mt. Akagi, one of Three Famous Mountains of Gunma Prefecture, to the winter wonderland of the frozen Lake Onuma. Here, visitors can take part in traditional smelt ice fishing. As you admire the sweeping, snow-kissed mountain vistas around you, you'll cut a hole in the ice and dangle in a string to catch the fish. You'll be further rewarded when you bring your catch to a nearby restaurant to have it deep-fried or turned into golden brown tempura. This exhilarating, mouth-watering experience is typically available from January through March, when the fish are in season.

And there's more to do here than just fish. Mt. Akagi is stunning in all seasons, and hiking is popular in spring, summer and fall, the colorful landscape of abundant flowers and trees changing its colors and expression with every season. Take a trip to Akagi Shrine, traditionally known for granting women’s wishes, which sits near Lake Onuma and reflects beautifully on the water's surface. There is also a hot spring village nearby, with renowned therapeutic baths said to soothe muscle pain and help with circulation, among many other health benefits.

Just 100km north of Tokyo, it's a mountain getaway perfect for the nature lover looking to venture off the beaten track.
