知床のエゾヒグマに感動

知床半島の海岸沿いのクルージングで野生動物を発見

北海道の北東端に位置する知床半島は、2005年に世界自然遺産に登録されました。また、国立公園にも指定されており、熊、鹿、ワシ、シャチ、クジラなど、数え切れないほどの動物が生息しています。半島は山岳地帯であり、また火山活動が活発なため、壮大な景色と多くの滝があるほか、温泉が流れる小川まであります。

クルーズツアーなら、熊やその他の危険な生き物から身を守りつつ、地元の野生動物の生活に干渉することなく観察することが出来ます。手つかずの知床国立公園でのツアーを計画の場合、1日2回催行で僅か2時間のルシャ湾コースがおすすめで、熊の出現率の高さや滝などがツアーの見どころです。運が良ければイルカやシャチ、さらにはクジラに出会えるかもしれません。

ツアーの起点はウトロ東で、電車でのアクセスの場合は知床斜里駅下車となります。駅からこの地域への交通手段は車かバスのみとなりますので、事前の計画が必要です。ツアーは季節限定で、4月下旬から10月末まで催行されています。

Admire the Ussuri Brown Bear in Shiretoko

Sail along Shiretoko Peninsula’s coast and gaze upon the local fauna!

At the northeast tip of Hokkaido sits the stunningly scenic Shiretoko Peninsula, officially recognized as a World Heritage Site in 2005. It’s also a national park, home to countless varieties of animal life including bears, deer, eagles, orcas, and whales! The peninsula is both mountainous and volcanically active, which makes for spectacular views and plenty of waterfalls. There are even rare hot water streams!

Cruise tours are an unintrusive way to explore the local wildlife, keeping you safe from bears and other potentially dangerous critters. If you’re considering a tour in the untamed Shiretoko National Park, the Rusha Course tour takes only two hours with two departures a day. Highlights you can look forward to are a high rate of bear sightings, seals, and waterfalls. If you’re lucky, you may even spot dolphins, orcas, or whales! The tour starts in Utorohigashi, with train access stopping in Shari. The region is only accessible via car or bus, so make sure you plan accordingly. You can choose between English and Japanese options. The tour is seasonal, and is available from late April through the end of October.
