An Authentic Alpine Ski Lodge on One of Japan's Premier Slopes

The family-operated Lodge Scole is the perfect intimate escape for a snowy ski break in the mountains of eastern Yamagata. Established by the Ojimas in 1973, the lodge was inspired by the couple’s visit to the Alps. Upon returning to Japan, they decided to recreate the mountain stay experience in Zao Onsen’s popular ski zone.

Lodge Scole’s rooms range from twin bed options to European chalet-style bunk accommodations. Visitors can fuel themselves before and after a day on the slopes in the cozy wood-paneled dining area, where a crackling fire perfectly sets the scene for a filling meal featuring local delicacies. Don’t miss the homemade cheesecake at tea time, or the live music performances that often accompany dinner.

Lodge Scole is located within minutes of some of Zao Onsen’s best ski areas. The staff will be happy to steer you to their favorite slopes and courses, or advise on the best place to view the region’s famous “snow monsters” (trees covered in ice to form sculpture-like objects). On the weekends, guests can request a guide of the slopes in English. Ready to take a break from skiing? The hotel offers a kokeshi doll crafting experience where you can paint your own traditional wooden figure.
