別府温泉の7つの地獄をのぞき込むと、感動と同じくらい恐怖も覚えるでしょう。この天然温泉は「地獄」の名にふさわしく、熱すぎて入ることができません。1,000年以上も前から地中で熱せられた温泉が地上に噴出する光景は、まるでこの世の「地獄」のようです。

「血の池地獄」（文字通り、血の池の地獄）の赤い熱泥や「龍巻地獄」（竜巻の地獄）の熱水を噴き出す間欠泉に驚嘆した後は、温泉を利用して作った温泉たまごやプリンに舌鼓を打ちましょう。その他の「海地獄」（海の地獄）と「鬼石坊主地獄」（坊主の頭の地獄）を巡った後には、地獄の湯を利用した足湯で疲れを癒やしてください。そんなことは絶対に無理だと思われるでしょうが、一日中歩いた後に足を浸けられるよう、適温に調整されているので大丈夫です。

コバルトブルーの色をした「海地獄」（海の地獄）から、真っ赤な「血の池地獄」（血の池の地獄）まで、各地獄ならではの素晴らしい光景を楽しめる「地獄めぐり」は、自然好きの方を魅了してやみません。2009年7月には、4つの地獄が国の名勝に指定されました。

A Hot Spring "Hell" That's Heavenly to Behold!

Peer into the depths of Beppu's seven hells, a collection of hot springs sure to fascinate and strike fear in equal measure. These natural pools live up to their name—they're all far too hot for you to wade into! Heated underground and bursting up to the surface as they have since over a millennia ago, the sight is truly that of a miraculous “hell” on Earth.

Marvel at the red mud of the Chinoike Jigoku (literally, “Blood Pond Hell”), wonder at the geyser of superheated water that is the Tatsumaki Jigoku (“Tornado Hell”), and then delight your taste buds with some eggs or pudding cooked with the heated water. Tour other hells —Umi Jigoku (“Sea Hell”) and Oniishibozu (“Monk’s Head Hell”)—before relaxing in one of the many foot baths in the area that use water from the hot springs. No, these hells haven't frozen over—we've just wrangled them down to a temperature perfect for soaking your feet after a long day of walking.

From the deep cobalt blue hues of the Umi Jigoku (“Sea Hell”) to the burning red of the Chinoike Jigoku (“Blood Pond Hell”), each “hell” offers striking and unique sights that will fascinate any nature lover. In July 2009, four of the pools were collectively designated as a spot of scenic beauty by the Japanese government.
