Three Mountains of Dewa
Escape the modern and experience simplicity and self-reflection
The Three Mountains of Dewa—Mt. Haguro, Mt. Gassan, and Mt. Yudono—represent the past, the present, and the possibility of the future. Located in Yamagata Prefecture, this site has been a center for mountain worship (yamabushido) for more than 1,500 years. Yamabushi training combines walking, hiking, simple meals, and contemplation, making all activity on the mountains into a meditative act. The first day of this four-day experience allows you to disconnect with the outside world and focus on communication with your inner self.
Master Hoshino, a Yamabushi priest who supervises all training, will guide you through ancient cedar forests and up stone steps as you climb the three mountains, focusing on past, then present, and future potential. Dining at forest temples and sleeping in simple pilgrim lodges at night brings you close to the power of the mountains, stripping away the modern world. This is a spectacular opportunity to experience both ancient Japan and encounter the edifying power of nature.
