Akan Forest and Frozen Crater Walk
Observe the interaction between the volcanic heat of the earth and the cold of the winter
Akan Lake fills most of the Akan Caldera, an ancient crater surrounded by yet more volcanoes and primeval forests. This hike takes you across part of the lake itself, the surface of which freezes solid during winter. From this seasonal viewpoint, look up to enjoy views of Mt. Oakan and Mt. Meakan, then look down to spot bubbling hot spring waters beneath the ice. As the tour departs Lake Akan, check out the mud volcanoes, known locally as bokke. These bubbling volcanic phenomena are another reminder of the incredible forces that shaped this area in times past.
