Furepe Falls Nature Walk

Parks Overview Parks Overview

Spot wildlife during a family-friendly trek on Shiretoko's wild peninsula

This gentle guided walk takes you through forest and grassland to one of Shiretoko National Park's highlights—Furupe-no-Taki Falls.

You’ll walk with a guide from Picchio's Shiretoko base along a nature path through a forest on the Shiretoko Peninsula. Many birds, such as great spotted woodpeckers, Japanese pygmy woodpeckers, buntings and stonechats, inhabit the area.

The landscape changes dramatically from the forest to the grassland, where there are opportunities to see grassland bird species, Hokkaido squirrels and chipmunks. Herds of Ezo deer gather here and forage for food.

After passing through the open field, you will reach the cliff where Furupe-no-Taki Falls drops from 100 meters into the Sea of Okhotsk. The views of the falls, the ocean, and the rugged peaks of the Shiretoko mountain range behind are breathtaking.

This beginner-friendly tour is easy enough for young children and seniors to join. Private group tours are available.
