築300年の古民家「篪庵（ちいおり）」は、徳島の山深い地域にあります。篪庵のような茅葺き屋根の民家は、かつて日本中の至る所にありましたが、現在は非常に珍しいものとなりました。玄関の引き戸を開けて中に入ると、まるで昔にタイムスリップしたかのような感覚を覚えるでしょう。囲炉裏や天井の梁は、昔のままの素朴な姿を残しています。

しかし、この古民家の全てが古いわけではありません。快適に滞在できるよう、日本の蒸し暑い夏には欠かせない空調設備や、美しいひのき風呂のあるリフォームされた浴室、長距離移動の後に家族や友人と一緒に料理を楽しめる設備の整ったキッチンが完備されています。篪庵は７人まで快適に宿泊できます。祖谷渓は、人里離れたところにあり、多くの店の営業時間は不規則なので、食べ物、飲み物、ガソリンは十分に用意してから向かいましょう。
レンタカーで訪れる方は、曲がりくねった山道をドライブし、古くからあるつる植物を編んで作られた橋や霊峰剣山のある秘境・奥祖谷（祖谷のさらに奥）を巡ることができます。公共交通を利用する場合は、阿波池田駅、または大歩危駅から祖谷渓までバスを利用できますが、必ず事前に時刻表を確認してください。

Rustic Relaxation Awaits You in Tokushima's Iya Valley

Bring the whole family to spend the night in old-fashioned comfort

Deep in the mountains of rural Tokushima you’ll find Chiiori, a 300-year-old restored farmhouse. Its thatched-roof design was once ubiquitous throughout Japan, though now it is a rare find indeed. The moment you slide open the front doors you'll feel transported back in time. From the open hearths to the high rafters, everything about Chiiori just screams "rustic."
Luckily not everything about this farmhouse is old-fashioned. It's been outfitted with air conditioning--a must in the muggy Japanese summers--a modern bathroom with a gorgeous cypress tub, and a fully-equipped kitchen where you can cook with your friends and family after a long day of travel. The place comfortably sleeps up to seven. Make sure you stock up on food, drinks, and gasoline before coming; the Iya Valley is pretty remote, and most shops keep irregular hours.
Those with rental cars can also explore the winding mountain roads of the untouched Oku Iya ("Inner Iya") area, home to ancient vine bridges and the sacred Mount Tsurugi. Those without a car can take a bus to the Iya Valley from Awa Ikeda Station or Oboke Station, but be sure to check the schedule before you go.
