The Royal Express
Tokyu Corporation ushers in a new era of comfort for Japanese rail travel
Tokyu Corporation’s Royal Express ushers in a new era of comfort for Japanese rail travel. The eight-car, 100-seat train shimmers a solid royal blue, accented by a single gold stripe. Passengers take in the sweeping views of the Pacific coast during their three-hour journey between Yokohama and Shimoda.
But it’s what’s inside that really counts. The interiors are designed by Eiji Mitooka, who has employed wood and washi (traditional Japanese paper), while adding such small surprises as his own calligraphy paintings, which hang in a gold-roofed carriage reserved for weddings and private parties. The overall effect is one of old-world glamour.
The panoramic windows offer endless views of the Pacific coast. An exclusive four-day, three-night tour offered exclusively in late summer and autumn will let you view the incredible nature of Hokkaido.
