Premium Shiroishi Japan
Visit the bucolic Yajiro Kokeshi Village in Shiroishi City, where a traditional master craftsman will give you a private tour around the village and explain the origins and characteristics of kokeshi, the iconic Japanese wooden dolls that are carved and painted by hand.
There are 11 recognized traditional kokeshi styles, five of which are from Miyagi Prefecture, including Shiroishi’s Yajiro kokeshi. Learn about the characteristics of the local kokeshi, such as the vivid concentric ring patterns on the crown, and the torso decoration which combines colorful rings and floral motifs.
Participants will get to tour an actual workshop, watch a demonstration of traditional techniques, and even get the chance to do some hands-on crafting. With the master’s expert guidance and help, you will create a beautifully finished and totally unique kokeshi doll, a lovely souvenir of your visit to Japan.
As the Yajiro Kokeshi Village is the base for four traditional master craftsmen, including two who have received the Prime Minister's Award and one who has given demonstrations at the Louvre Museum in Paris, you are in good hands!
