Paddle up to the giant red gates of Shirahige Jinja

Enjoy a mystical stand-up paddleboard (SUP) experience on the beautiful Lake Biwa. As one of the most iconic locations in Shiga Prefecture, it’s not just the largest lake in Japan – it’s also home to the mysterious vermillion Otorii (Great Gate) that seems to float on the lake’s surface.

Located on the northeast side of the lake, the Otorii marks the entrance to Shirahige Jinja which is located on the lakeshore. You can paddle your SUP board right up to the giant vermillion gates for unforgettable Instagram shots! As you enjoy the gorgeous scenery on a slow paddle, you can also see countless fish swimming in the clear water. There will also be some free time at the private beach near the gate when you can enjoy SUP yoga, go for a prayer at Shirahige Jinja or simply relax in nature.

This experience is about an hour away from Kyoto; reservations accepted the day before or on the day.
