A Private Family Villa Annex in Historic Takayama**

Kusakabe Family residence / TANIYA

TANIYA is a renovated annex next door to the celebrated Kusakabe Family Residence in the historic old town of Takayama. The residence is preserved as a folk crafts museum, and the adjacent accommodations help showcase the work of today’s local craftsmen and artisans. It is available for one exclusive party per night—welcoming guests who appreciate relaxing in the refined luxury born from time-honored skills and a deep traditional commitment to perfection.

Originally built in the Meiji-period (1868-1912) in the style of a classic machiya townhouse, the residence features an expansive layout, with a variety of rooms designed for exceptional comfort and privacy. Highlights include such architectural features as a tea room, where guests are greeted with freshly prepared matcha; an earthen-floored doma dining area; a courtyard with traditional garden; and a bath made entirely of hinoki cypress, known for the fragrance that envelops bathers as they unwind in the soothing waters while gazing out at the garden.

A fully-equipped kitchen allows guests prepare ingredients from the nearby morning market, or invite a personal chef for in-house dining. A tatami-mat sitting room with shoji screens, a study overlooking the townscape outside, and a bedroom furnished with pieces created by local artisans, complete the elegant interior.

For an even more immersive experience, guests may also use the adjacent Kusakabe Family residence—a nationally designated Important Cultural Property—as their own private lounge. A concierge is also available to arrange other activities that introduce the culture, history, and natural beauty of this charming town and the ancient forest that surrounds it.
