Cherry Blossom Spots in Shimane 【A TRIP TO THE HEART OF THE SAN'IN REGION】

Cherry Blossom Spots in Shimane

The best period to see cherry blossoms in Shimane Prefecture is from the end of March until the beginning of April. Listed below are the recommended cherry blossom viewing spots. They are also highlights of Shimane.

Tamayugawa River Bank

Tamayugawa River Bank is famous for the scenic two kilometer long arch tunnel formed by Someiyoshino cherry blossoms. Visitors can also enjoy illuminated cherry blossoms from 18:30 to 22:30.

Kiyomizu Temple

Kiyomizu Temple, a Buddhist temple, located in Kiyomizu Town, Yasugi City offers a picturesque view of 100 cherry blossoms in full bloom against the backdrop of the three-storied pagoda. On the temple grounds, visitors can experience vegetarian shojin ryori (Buddhist cuisine) served by the ryokan (the traditional Japanese inns) line up.

Matsue Jozan Park

The Matsue Castle grounds, called Matsue Jozan Park, located in the Tonomachi district of Matsue City, is listed as one of 100 best cherry blossom viewing spots in Japan. During the cherry blossom season, visitors can enjoy a sight of marvelous combination of Matsue Castle and over 200 cherry trees, including a wide variety of species: yoshino cherry, yaezakura (double-blossom cherry tree), weeping cherry trees and more. The park holds Oshiro Matsuri (Castle's Festival) every year from the end of March until the beginning of April. This year's festival takes place from 24 March to 14 April. At night, visitors can enjoy magical atmosphere with light-up cherry trees and the Tenshukaku (the main tower of the castle) illuminated by paper lanterns. There is also a samurai procession and special on-stage events. Don't miss an adventure inside the castle itself to learn about its 400 years history. Matsue Castle, built in 1611 during the Edo Period, is one of the only 12 original castles that remain intact in Japan. The castle was enlisted as one of the Important Cultural Properties of Japan in 1950, and was added to the list of National Treasures of Japan in 2015. 360-degree view from the top of the castle is breathtaking.

Minatoyama Park and Yonago Castle Ruins

In the area around Yonago, a major city in western Tottori Prefecture, there are also many cherry blossom viewing spots. About 500 cherry trees come into full bloom there. From Minatoyama Park, visitors can admire a superb view of the blossoms with the Mt. Daisen in the background. At the park, Yonago Cherry Blossom Festival will be taking place this year from 29 March to 7 April. Another must-see is the cherry blossoms light-up by lanterns from 18:00 to 22:30.
