Snowcat ski tour of Hachimantai

The most exhilarating way to explore Hachimantai’s snowy backcountry

In the winter months, the Hachimantai area receives some of the best powder snow in Honshu, Japan’s main island. This powder—along with several resorts in the area—makes it an excellent spot for skiers. However, one of the more thrilling ways to explore the snowy landscape is to take a snowcat ski tour through the region’s untamed backcountry. These sturdy vehicles will carry you on a sightseeing ride around the Daikoku Forest, previously a ski resort but now reclaimed by nature.
If you want to get out and explore on foot, there's the option to combine the snowcat ride with a bracing hike on Mount Chausu and the chance to carve tracks on Hachimantai’s vast swathes of pure off-piste slopes. After the tour, take advantage of the region’s numerous hot springs to recharge your batteries the Japanese way, accompanied by a glass of the local Washinoo sake.
