Takachiho Hanareno-yado Kamigakure Inn

Be treated like a deity at an elegant inn

While Hanareno-yado Kamigakure Inn has been welcoming guests for 80 years, the rooms have been updated in sleek, modern Japanese style, with a choice of Japanese or Western beds. There are just eight rooms scattered throughout the landscaped gardens, so you can completely unwind and enjoy your private hot spring bath, drawn from a sacred waterfall. One of the real pleasures of staying at a traditional Japanese inn is the array of local specialties served at dinner and breakfast. This region is famous for Takachiho wagyu beef, served with seasonal dishes such as salt-grilled rainbow trout and bamboo gratin.
Nearby, you can enjoy nightly Kagura dance performances at Takachiho Shrine, traverse the many bridges above the Takachiho gorge for views of Manai Waterfall, or explore the jade waters below, by rowboat. The name of the inn, Kamigakure, means hidden gods, which comes from Japan’s creation myth; when the goddess Amaterasu retreated to a cave in nearby Iwato, the other gods held a wild party outside, to tempt her out. You can visit the cave and the many local shrines, or, like a goddess, hide out and enjoy the comforts of the inn.
