Towada Art Center
World-renowned artwork set amidst community-focused architecture
Within its stark white structures, Towada Art Center features unique installations by world-renowned artists from Japan and beyond. Its permanent collection is comprised of 38 commissioned artworks by Yoko Ono, Yayoi Kusama, Choi Jeong Hwa, Ron Muek, and others. These are joined by an ever-changing set of temporary exhibits and projects.
Towada Art Center’s most striking architectural features are its standalone exhibition rooms, each containing a single permanent exhibit, that are connected to the others by glass corridors. As well as allowing a more focused appreciation of individual works, this design mirrors the jumbled layout of Towada’s main Kanchogaidori Avenue.
Founded as part of the broader Arts Towada Project, the Center features large glass walls and a deliberately open layout, with outdoor installations and exhibition spaces providing an inviting setting for locals and visitors alike.
