Yakushima is a spectacular sub-tropical island located in the southwest of Japan, tucked in between Kyushu and Amami—although much closer to mainland Kagoshima. The ocean flows past in a current that brings warm water from the south, keeping this island warmer than its latitude should allow. This peculiar climate has given rise to a rich ecosystem unlike any other part of Japan. Designated as Japan’s first United Nations World Heritage and Natural Heritage Site, this pristinely preserved ecosystem has more than 1,900 species of flora living in its ancient forests.
