Japan’s Muslim-Friendly Tourism:

Visit Shibuya, Tokyo’s Cultural Hub

Shibuya in Tokyo welcomes and entertains tourists from all over the world. Popular destinations around Shibuya Station include Shibuya Scramble Square, Shibuya Hikarie, Shibuya Fukuras, and SHIBUYA STREAM. Nearby, you will find shopping and entertainment at Shibuya Parco and Miyashita Park.

Located in front of Shibuya Station is the Shibuya Scramble Crossing, often referred to simply as “the scramble.” It is said to be the world’s busiest crossing with upwards of 1,000 pedestrians crossing at a time. The sight of so many people making their way across the intersection is impressive, and definitely worth a visit.

Shibuya Sky is an observation space on the top of Shibuya Scramble Square, a large commercial building complex. From a height of about 229 meters, an open observation deck offers thrilling views of Tokyo, including Shibuya Scramble Crossing, Tokyo Tower, Tokyo Skytree, and Japan National Stadium. On a clear day, you might even see Mt. Fuji, from the helipad at the center. The lawn-covered helipad and areas with hammock-like netting allow you to sit back and relax as you take in the sights.

The most popular spot up on the observation deck is Sky Edge, where the Tokyo cityscape seems to spread out from right below your feet. Experience the rush of walking to the edge, separated from the scenery only by reinforced glass barriers. The view from Sky Edge is at its most spectacular when the sun sets: lights from landmarks and buildings shine like stars, making you feel like you are floating in the sky.

At prayer times, you can visit the prayer room at Shibuya PARCO, a shopping center in Shibuya. A variety of Japanese art and culture can be explored on each floor, allowing you to enjoy more than just shopping.

The prayer room is located on the fifth floor and is free to use. It is equipped with a wudu facility and is divided into separate areas for men and women. In the same building you can enjoy a view of Shibuya from the rooftop park for no charge. The night view is not to be missed.

There are a few Muslim-friendly dining options in the department store, including the popular steak restaurant Kiwamiya’s Shibuya PARCO branch down at the first basement floor. The restaurant serves halal-certified black wagyu beef hamburg steak.

Miyashita Park opened in 2020. It consists of a park, hotel, and the shopping complex Rayard Miyashita Park, with more than 90 fashion and food shops. Perfect for taking a breather, the relaxing open space and its many facilities blend in well with the cityscape of Shibuya.

The park sits atop a trendy commercial building and includes large green spaces, a multi-purpose sports facility, and a food court. It also has its own bronze statue of the loyal dog Hachiko, like the one near Shibuya Station. Miyashita Park’s version is named Shibuya Hachi Compass, in reference to the compass-shaped structure it sits within.

Spend time at the beautiful Tokyo Camii, one of Japan’s largest mosques

The Tokyo Camii and Diyanet Turkish Culture Center was originally built in 1938 as a cooperative effort between Japan and Turkey, a country that has historically close relations with Japan. Reconstructed in 2000, it is part-cultural center and part-Ottoman-style mosque. Arabic calligraphy, arabesques, and geometric patterning can be found throughout the mosque, alongside various other types of art.

The room nearest the entrance is a lounge decorated with beautiful Iznik tiles. Be sure to look up at the decorated ceiling as you sit and relax in the lounge. The mosque area is located on the second floor of the building. Sunlight filters through colorful stained-glass windows and a beautiful chandelier hangs in the center of the room. The domed ceiling is designed to reflect the majesty of the cosmos, and the chandelier is based on Arabic calligraphy. The second floor of the mosque (the third floor of the building) is exclusively for women.

The magnificent mosque is open to all.

You can buy Muslim-friendly food and other items from around the world at the Halal Market located inside Tokyo Camii. A large selection of halal foods (as certified by private organizations) produced in Japan are also available, including senbei (rice crackers).

A 5-minute walk from Yoyogi-Uehara Station on the Odakyu Line, the splendid, easily-accessible mosque is a must-visit spot for a glimpse of Islamic culture in Japan.
