Tohoku Mototerakoji Catholic Church Japanese Name: カトリック元寺小路教会
Mototerakoji Church was first built by Paris Foreign Mission priest Father Prutolin in 1877. It was completed under the name of the Church of the Lord of Heaven in 1897, but in 1936, it was known as the Cathedral of the Diocese of Sendai. Unfortunately, the cathedral suffered an air strike in 1945 and was burned to the ground.
The present Cathedral, located at the center of Sendai City, was built in 1993. It has approximately 1,100 parishioners.
The Church features the main church where a room is available so mothers can follow the mass with their children. There is also a small chapel and a hall for the faithful. The church also offers Sunday school for primary school children, Marian room for infants, and also a group for the youth.
