Tenku

Tenku, a private retreat in the myth-shrouded mountains of Kirishima, Kagoshima Prefecture, takes the onsen experience to new heights of exclusivity. Five villas, each with their own private outdoor bath, are dotted around a landscape spanning 183 sq. meters. Distance between villas lends each one the impression of isolation, and of its natural surroundings being for the exclusive enjoyment of the occupants.

A member of Relais & Châteaux, Tenku has been meticulously developed over more than 30 years by owner Tateo Tajima, beginning with land clearing and hot spring source identification, and remains an ongoing project. Features of the villas can include separate bedroom and living room suites, as well as outdoor hot-spring baths with stunning views of the Kirishima peaks. The banks of the nearby Amori River serve as a setting for al fresco dinners, concerts, and other events.

The on-site restaurant uses seasonal ingredients freshly picked from Tenku’s own fields and sourced locally within Kagoshima. Befitting the level of exclusivity offered, Tenku can accommodate requests including chartered air travel and arrange private experiences such as concerts and special dinners at memorable locations.
