A Day Trip To Shonan (Fujisawa & Enoshima)
South of Kanagawa Prefecture lies Shonan along the coast of Sagami Bay, roughly an hour from Tokyo with a direct train line; perfect for a day’s trip! For those traveling as a family group, Shonan’s relaxing environment is well suited for everyone.
First stop in Fujisawa city is Ibuki Farm Restaurant where you can experience hands-on seasonal fruits/ vegetables harvesting activities in the morning followed by a healthy and hearty lunch at the restaurant. The dishes served here are made with local grown produce and homemade fermented ingredients. Even the rice served comes from a local organic rice farm which uses ducks to eliminate insects and weeds, so it’s pesticide-free.
After lunch, hop on the classic Enoden train and head to Enoshima island. This small island will definitely keep you busy till dusk. Have a stroll along the seaside, try various local snacks topped with shirasu (tiny whitebait fish), souvenir shopping and don’t forget to hike up to Enoshima Shrine, it’s one of Japan’s Three Great Benzaiten Shrines and the sunset view from the top is breath-taking.
You can also enjoy a panoramic view of Sagami Bay from Enoshima Sea Candle Observation Deck. During certain seasons, special illumination events are held at night; watch the island transform into an ethereal wonderland.
