Manai-no-taki Waterfall in Takachiho gorge is one of the "100 Best Waterfalls of Japan." The breathtaking scenery is popular not only among locals, but attracts a lot of tourists from both Japan and abroad too. Takachiho has been known in Shinto legends as a sacred ground where the gods descended to earth and is one of Japan's "power spots." The natural scenic beauty of the V-shaped gorge with a drop of 17 m, stretching 7 km along the cliffs, is wild and magnificent.
In the daytime, layers of lights filtered through trees and reflected on the water surface create an eye-captivating beauty, while the gorge is lit up at night during the summer for a limited time. The night view of the waterfall and surrounding area are illuminated bewitchingly and the light reflects on emerald green water pockets, creating a fantastical world as if a deity had descended to the earth. With the walking path also being illuminated by bamboo lanterns, you can stroll around without difficulty even at nighttime. Especially nice in the early evening when the cool breeze containing plentiful negative ion blows through and you can enjoy a scenic beauty distinct from that of the daytime, Takachiho is an ideal place as an escape from the hot and humid Japanese summer weather.
If you visit by car, it is better to have a flashlight with you because the parking area does not have outdoor lights.
