Sendai City

Sendai, as it is known today, was founded by the famous Date Masamune. Nicknamed the “The City of Trees,” Sendai still has about 60 Zelkova trees. Many of the sightseeing locations of Sendai are related to the Date clan, one of the most powerful clans of the Sengoku era. Zuihoden Mausoleum is where the Date clan has been buried and boasts personal artifacts of the Date family. The ruins of Aoba Castle, also known as Sendai Castle, is not far from the JR Sendai Station and offers a charming view of the city skyline.

The most famous local cuisine from Sendai is gyu-tan, or grilled beef tongue. The lightly seasoned grilled tongue can be found in Japanese barbecue restaurants throughout Sendai. Aside from this, during every July, Sendai celebrates its tradition of papercraft with the Tanabata Festival. During the Tanabata Festival, the city of Sendai is transformed into a colorful display of traditional and modern paper ornaments.
