Akita is historically famous for the Kakunodate Samurai Residences, offering a walk in the shoes of the samurai life. Today, Akita celebrates the Kanto Festival, one of the three largest summer festivities in Tohoku, where pole bearers balance lanterns, displaying strength, balance, and grace. Outside the fringes of society are Nyuto Onsen-kyo and Lake Towada, both remarkably beautiful in their own ways, with serene nature, traditional Japanese inns, hot spring resorts, camping grounds, and more.
