The shrine of scholars, not far from Tokyo University

Sugawara Michizane was a popular government official in the 9th century famed for his intellectual prowess. He was so impressive that after his death he was deified and worshipped as the god of learning, and is enshrined here in this Tokyo complex.

How to Get There

The shrine is easy to reach by train.

Yushima Tenmangu is a two-minute walk from exit 3 of Yushima Station on the Tokyo Metro Chiyoda Line.

If you want to pass that test

Today, students from all over come to Yushima Tenmangu with hopes of passing their school entrance exams. Because of its proximity to the University of Tokyo, the shrine is particularly popular with those facing the elite university's entrance exam.
