The mountain where devils live: Volcanic activity becomes a tourist spot at the foot of Mount Asama

Mt. Asama stretches from Gunma Prefecture to Nagano Prefecture and reaches 2,568 meters in elevation. Located in Tsumagoi Village at the foothills of the mountain on the Gunma side, Mt. Asama Magma Stone Park is part of the Joshin’etsu Kogen National Park and is covered with lava rock that was spewed from Mt. Asama in a major eruption in 1798. Also known as Onioshidashi Park, the area received its name from the impression of the people who witnessed the eruption, saying that it was as if a devil turned violent in the crater and was pushing out rocks.
In addition to the lava rocks, the park features seasonal plants for visitors to enjoy. Take a walk past Japanese azaleas, rhododendrons, the rock-breaking pine tree, luminous moss, and naturally occurring cold storage from underground air blowing through holes in the rocks. Conveniently close to Tokyo, Gunma Prefecture is the perfect place for any traveler looking to experience the beauty of nature to its fullest.
How to get there
From Tokyo Station, take the Joetsu Shinkansen and get off at Takasaki Station (about 50 minutes). Transfer to the Agatsuma Line and get off at Manza Kazawaguchi Station (about 1 hour 40 minutes). From Manza-Kazawaguchi Station, it takes about 15 minutes by car to Mt. Asama Magma Stone Park.
