The mountain where devils live: a tourist spot made of lava at the foot of Mt. Asama
Mt. Asama stretches from Gunma Prefecture to Nagano Prefecture and reaches 2,568 meters in elevation. Located in Tsumagoi Village, at the foothills of the mountain on the Gunma side, Mt. Asama Magma Stone Park is part of the Joshin’etsu Kogen National Park and is covered with lava rock that was spewed from Mt. Asama in a major eruption over 200 years ago. Also known as Onioshidashi Park, the area receives its name from the impression of the people who witnessed the eruption, saying that it was as if a devil turned violent in the crater and was pushing out rocks. In addition to the lava rocks, the park features seasonal plants for visitors to enjoy. Take a walk as you view Japanese azaleas, rhododendrons, the rock breaking pine tree, luminous moss, and naturally occurring cold storage from underground air blowing through holes in the rocks. Conveniently close to Tokyo, Gunma Prefecture is the perfect place for any traveler looking to experience the beauty of nature to its fullest.
