Japan’s Heritage of Traditional Crafts and Age-Old Techniques

In December 2020, UNESCO added 15 of Japan’s traditional skills related to the conservation of wooden architecture, to its list of Intangible Cultural Heritage. Here we explore the essence of two of those techniques — the art of making entsuke gold leaf from Kanazawa City in Ishikawa Prefecture, and making lacquer from Ninohe City, Iwate Prefecture.
