Hokuriku - Empowering Lives

Exploring Life and Nature in a Legendary Japanese Town

Sommano Xaysombath - Laos

I embarked on a journey through Hokuriku in Japan, a place where tradition meets tranquility. From peaceful shrines and scenic gardens to charming streets full of history, this place felt like a step back in time. It was the perfect escape to experience the true heart of Japan.

As part of my visit, I explored one of the main themes of the 2025 International Exposition, “Empowering Lives,” and discovered how traditional craft experiences not only spark creativity and empower individuals, but also reflect a deep connection between nature and culture.

Gujo Hachiman

Gujo Hachiman (Tokai Region, Gifu Prefecture) is an old town full of history and rich stories. To me, it felt like it had preserved both its natural beauty and cultural heritage. The highlight of my trip was  Gujo Hachiman Castle, the iconic landmark of the town. I hiked about 20 minutes up the mountain through a scenic natural path to reach the castle.

I discovered that the castle was originally built in 1559, but the current structure was rebuilt in 1933. Gujo Castle is considered one of the best viewpoints in the area, offering a 360-degree panoramic view of the town below.

Riverside views

I visited a spot hidden in the countryside called the Nousaku Workshop. This peaceful space brings together art, tradition, and creativity in the most authentic way, letting visitors try out various hands-on activities. I got to experience metal casting and stamping using special tools to create unique patterns on tin. Although it looked simple, it took patience and focus. I really enjoyed the process and the feeling of making something with my own hands. The staff were very warm and welcoming. They explained each step carefully and shared touching stories about their work and their passion. I realized that this activity was more than just making crafts. It’s about slowing down, learning from tradition, and connecting with the local way of life.
