Hokkaido

A 4-Day Adventure Across the Seasonal Beauty of Hokkaido

Co-creation

Hokkaido’s seasonal flowers have fostered new industries in tourism, wellness, and conservation, illustrating the GREEN×EXPO 2027 subtheme of Co-creation. Over four days, explore the region’s diverse landscapes, from cultivated flower fields to alpine wildflowers, while connecting with local communities and sustainable practices.

Day 1: Frolic through flowers in Furano, Biei, and Kamikawa

Take the train from Yokohama and fly from Tokyo’s Haneda Airport to Asahikawa Airport, then take a bus or drive about an hour into Hokkaido’s heartland. Begin at the Furano Flower Fields, where lavender and other herbaceous plants are used for both their beauty and economic value. Continue by car or bus for around an hour to Shikisai no Oka in Biei for rolling flower fields of seasonal blooms.

End the day with a 1.5-hour drive to Daisetsu Mori no Garden in Kamikawa, a hillside garden that preserves native plant species and has floral craft workshops. Overnight stays in the Kamikawa area provide convenient access to these attractions.

Day 2: Tickled pink in Ozora

After a two-and-a-half-hour drive, arrive at Higashimokoto Shibazakura Park. The expansive moss phlox gardens showcase the results of community-led cultivation, where volunteers maintain vibrant pink fields without chemical treatments. Visitors can also enjoy recreational activities, from fishing ponds to food stalls.

After exploring the park, travel about an hour to stay overnight in Teshikaga, allowing ample time to experience local hot springs and natural attractions, including Lake Kussharo and Lake Mashu.

Day 3: Walk on wooden walkways at the Kushiro Wetlands

Drive approximately 1.5 hours to Kushiro Shitsugen National Park, home to Japan’s largest wetland. Here, wooden walkways and guided canoe tours bring travelers close to diverse ecosystems, from marshlands to forested areas, without damaging the environments. Seasonal flowers change from spring through autumn, and there are opportunities to spot rare wildlife such as red-crowned cranes.

After a day immersed in nature, end the night in Kushiro, a convenient base to recharge and travel the following morning.

Day 4: Trekking remote Rebun Island

Take a flight from Kushiro to Rishiri Airport, then a ferry to Rebun Island. The island’s wild alpine flora flourishes on its rocky shores, creating a unique environment for guided treks. Trails such as the Momoiwa Observatory route pass through hundreds of wildflower species while affording coastal vistas.

Overnight on Rebun to enjoy the island’s remote charm and be immersed in Hokkaido’s distinctive seasonal beauty.
