Cherry Blossom Viewing at Tokiwa Park

HOME > Japan’s Local Treasures > Cherry Blossom Viewing at Tokiwa Park

See 3,500 sakura trees blooming at one of Japan’s top 100 hanami spots

Ube City

Visit Tokiwa Park in springtime, and you’ll be treated to the sight of thousands of cherry blossoms in flower throughout the 100-hectare park. Located in Yamaguchi, in the far west of Honshu, lakeside Tokiwa Park encompasses everything from an amusement park to outdoor art, but its highlight is the Sakura Festival held when the cherry trees bloom in springtime.

Most of them (3,100) are Yoshino cherry blossom trees, Japan’s most iconic variety; you can admire these in the park’s Sakurayama area, as well as around the fountain pond and along the promenade. Also along the promenade are around 300 Yaezakura, a late-blooming type, and there are six more types of cherry tree dotted around the scenic landscape.

As well as enjoying a classic hanami blossom viewing experience during the day, between late March and early April you can enjoy seeing the delicate pink and white flowers illuminated each evening.

How to get there

30 minutes by express bus from JR Shin-Yamaguchi Station or 20 minutes by city loop bus from JR Ube Shinkawa Station. Alternatively, 30 minutes from JR Shin-Yamaguchi Station to Tokiwa Station, from where the park is a 19 minute walk. 5 minutes by taxi from Yamaguchi-Ube Airport.
