Fireworks, dancing and drumming - it's a celebration every night
Toyooka Tourism Innovation
Every year the hot spring resort town of Kinosaki Onsen in Hyogo Prefecture hosts outdoor events from late July through August. The town has been known as a relaxing get away since onsen hot springs were discovered here in the 8th century. Visit in summer to relax in the onsen and take in the daily entertainment.
For games and snacks head to Shisho Shrine, next to Goshono-yu, one of Kinosaki’s seven onsen, where every day the Shrine Festival is held. To eat and drink you are sure to find hot weather favourites like yakisoba noodles, kakigori shaved ice and cold beers.
On many evenings at 21:00 look up to see colourful firework displays above the Otani River, a willow-lined waterway through the center of town.
At the Furusato (lit. ‘hometown’) Festival on August 6, feel the beat of powerful taiko drums, and try folk dancing known as Bon Odori, an annual Buddhist event for commemorating one's ancestors.
As a magical finale, witness the Lantern Festival in late August. Hundreds of people gather along the river, write wishes on paper lanterns, put a candle inside and watch them float down the river. Make a wish and see if it comes true.
Do as the locals do and wear a yukata cotton kimono and geta wooden sandals, as you onsen hop and enjoy classic festival events, and Kinosaki will transport you back to a traditional, nostalgic era of Japan.
How to get there
Events throughout the town once you get off at JR Kinosaki Onsen Station.
