Explore a mysterious ancient gorge in Yufu City, Oita Prefecture

Oita Prefecture

The historic Yufugawa Gorge is located in Yufu City, Oita Prefecture, between the famous onsen towns of Beppu and Yufuin. During this scenic tour, you will paddle and trek deep into the gorge.

Yufugawa Gorge was formed by the erosion of pyroclastic flows from volcanic eruptions some 600,000 years ago. For generations, it has been a valuable water source for local farmers. More recently, it has become a natural tourist attraction. With the help of experienced outdoor guides, the members of Yufuism and local residents worked together to create this tour to promote green tourism.

You will explore the hidden treasures of the gorge in a packraft led by an experienced guide. The day begins by meeting your guide at an old, charmingly repurposed elementary school. You will then hike down into the gorge for a day of paddling, climbing over boulders, and walking along the river.

While floating on the tranquil water, you will enjoy views of magnificent rock walls covered with thick layers of moss and ferns. In the spring and summer you can see countless waterfalls. The gorge’s ecosystem showcases a variety of insects, reptiles and wild birds. Why not take a break from the city and relax in the serenity and stunning scenery of Yufugawa Gorge?
