Experience paddleboarding and gather razor clams along the mudflats of Matama Coast

Bungotakada City Tourism Town Planning Co., Ltd.

The Matama Coast in Kyushu stretches along the northern edges of Bungotakada City facing the Suonada Sea and is famed for its unobstructed sunset views. The beach has smooth mudflats during low tide that reflect the sky, and the area is designated as one of the 100 best scenic sunset-viewing spots in Japan. A guide to sunrise and sunset times appears on a sign in front of a cafe at one end of the beach. The cafe and rest area are good locations for photos. Water activities such as stand up paddleboarding and paddleboard yoga are available. Between March and May, the area is also a popular spot for gathering razor clams along the mudflats.

How to get there

From Hakata Station, take the Nippo Line limited express train “Sonic” and get off at Usa Station (about 1 hour 45 minutes). Take a bus from Usa Station, transfer at Usa Hachiman, then transfer at Bungotakada and get off at Tomari (about 40 minutes).
