Renovated Hotel in Tochigi
HOME > Japan’s Local Treasures > Renovated Hotel in Tochigi
Ohtawara Tourism Corporation
This boutique hotel in Nakagawa, Tochigi Prefecture, captivates guests with the striking contrast of Edo (1603 - 1868) and Meiji (1868 - 1912) period structures combined with modern refurbishments. Just a few hours north of Tokyo, it is a hidden gem in terms of the ample experiential activities and sightseeing spots within the immediate surrounds and further afield.
After over 200 years as the Iizuka family residence, in the early 2000s, the residence was registered as a tangible cultural property and later renovated into Iizukatei Hotel in 2019. By blending contemporary furnishings with traditional Japanese design elements, the hotel offers a distinctive lodging experience that is truly unparalleled.
Each season brings different experiences whether it may be firefly hunting, visiting sakura spots void of crowds, or comparing apple pies from local vendors in the autumn season. For interests such as art, cuisine, or scenic nature, you will be surprised to find several unique museums, craft workshops, quirky cafes, and outdoor trails all available in close proximity. Iizukatei works closely together with the local town residents, viewing them as an extension of the hotel so that guests can also enjoy the activities and services they offer.
From Tokyo Station, take the Tohoku-Hokkaido Shinkansen to Utsunomiya Station (about 2 hours), transfer to the JR Utsunomiya line for Ujiie Station (about 15 minutes), then take the local bus from Ujiie Station to the Minami-machi bus stop (45 minutes). The hotel is a 1-minute walk away from the station.
