Like History? Then You’ll Love the Takayama-Hokuriku Area Tourist Pass

The Takayama-Hokuriku Area Tourist Pass by JR Central is a rail pass dedicated to foreign tourists. It offers five consecutive days of unlimited travel on JR trains, connecting Nagoya with Takayama and Toyama, and Osaka with Kanazawa and Toyama, as well as on buses to Shirakawa-go.

If you are a pass holder, you can head directly to Shirakawa-go and the neighboring Gokayama region from Kansai International Airport. This famous UNESCO World Heritage Site is popular for its traditional gassho-zukuri houses with steep thatched roofs resembling the hands of Buddhist monks pressed together in prayer. This distinct architectural design was meant to withstand the large amounts of snowfall in the region during winter. In autumn, the compound is filled with red and yellow leaves, lending the best spot for a selfie.
