Even City Girls Enjoy Country Life at Mother Farm, Chiba

Growing up in Kuala Lumpur, I was never really interested in visiting farms. I’m a city girl to the core, and my favorite hangouts are shopping malls.

But when I visited Mother Farm, or Mother Bokujo, on the Boso Peninsula of Chiba Prefecture, I was surprised at how much I loved it. I can say with complete honesty that it’s one of the best places I’ve been to in Japan!

Mother Farm overlooks gorgeous hills and valleys.

Situated on a mountainside overlooking hills and valleys, Mother Farm has ducks, sheep, goats, and cows galore. From what I can tell, they’re all kept very clean and happy. The farm itself is also quite large, with green pastures and quaint buildings. Not into animals? You can take part in hands-on activities such as cooking, baking, and crafting.

To me, the highlight of Mother Farm is the sheep-herding show. At the sound of a whistle, a herd of sheep emerges from the thicket with two adorable dogs working together to round them up. The sheep are then led onto the hill where visitors await, and in that moment you’ll find yourself literally surrounded by about 50 fluffy sheep―so fun! (This show is not available in July and August and is canceled in case of rain.)

In the sheep-herding show at Mother Farm, two dogs rustle up the flock.

If you love animals or are traveling with children, Mother Farm is a splendid way to spend the afternoon out in nature. It’s about an hour away from Tokyo, so it’s close enough for a day trip with the family.

Adorable animals await you at Mother Farm.
