The Castle in the Sky: Echizen Ōno Castle
Located about 250 meters high on a small mountain in Ono, Echizen Ōno Castle has drawn global attention for its unique weather phenomenon. On some mornings, depending on the weather, a thick fog envelops the city like a sea of clouds, making the castle appear as a breathtaking "castle in the sky". The castle town is hidden below, highlighting the picturesque view of the castle on top of the mountain. As time passes by, the sea of clouds disappear, revealing the majestic castle town view. To catch this spectacular scene, you can visit Echizen Ono Castle from October to April, from dawn until around 9:00 in the morning.
Originally constructed in 1580 and later rebuilt in 1968 as a museum, the present structure stands on the original castle's stone foundation. This well-preserved castle allows visitors to step back in time and experience the life of feudal Japan. While you’re here, learn about Japan’s history and witness panoramic views of the city from the castle's vantage points.

Eiheiji Temple
A sight to behold in any season of the year, Eiheiji Temple is one of Japan's most important Zen Buddhist temples. Located in the mountains, Eiheiji provides a serene environment for contemplation and learning about Zen Buddhism.
Beyond its appeal as a tourist spot, Eiheiji has resonated with the sincere atmosphere of Zen practitioners since 1244, following the teachings of Zen Master Dōgen. You can engage in everyday activities like the daily morning service and gain insights into the monk's way of life through a selection of programs, one of which is the Sanzen program or the practice of Zen sitting (zazen).
The Sanzen Program offered in the temple is a wonderful opportunity for participants to immerse themselves in zazen—a 40-minute meditation guided by experienced monks. The program includes communal living and bathing, 4 to 5 zazen sessions, participation in the morning service, a documentary on Eiheiji, a guided temple tour, and meals featuring traditional cuisine. As you visit this destination, come with an open mind, free from preconceptions, and immerse yourself in the experience of Eiheiji Temple through your five senses.
Note: As the present head of the Soto school of Zen Buddhism and an active Zen monastery, many monks still go to Eiheiji to practice, and there’s a chance you may get a glimpse of them when you visit the temple. If you do, make sure to be respectful by speaking in hushed voices and avoid photographing the monks and restricted areas.
