One of the well-known products of Kagoshima is “Kurobuta pork”. Pork meat draws much attention because it contains high-quality protein and also high in nutrition while being low in calories, and is also good for recovery from fatigue and high in nutrition. For these reasons, it is a popular food in summer. Among pork brands, “Kurobuta pork” is considered to be a top brand because of the unique breeding and raising methods and Kagoshima boasts the largest production volume in Japan. Because of very fine and tight muscle fibers, the texture of the meat is very soft and gentle and it has a pleasing flavor. Some even say it represents the art of pork. “Kagoshima Kurobuta pork” does not simply mean being raised in Kagoshima; it also has to clear such standards as being fed a certain amount of Kagoshima sweet potatoes. After clearing all standards, it is designated as “Kagoshima Kurobuta pork”. Its distribution system is well organized and secure, showing information such as the location and name of the producer. Stores to sell the product are also designated. When you are in Kagoshima, don’t forget to ask for “Kagoshima Kurobuta pork!”
“Shabu-shabu” is a highly recommended way to enjoy “Kagoshima Kurobuta pork” in which thin slices of the pork are cooked in a pot of boiling water and then dipped in a tasty sauce. A tip to enjoy shabu-shabu is to parboil very quickly and eat it while the meat is still very soft. If you boil it too much, delicious fat is melted away.
