A nationally famous spot of incredible autumn beauty, and a festival to match

A beautiful ravine stretching from the Iimori Mountains to the Tomoe River in Aichi Prefecture near Nagoya , Korankei Gorge is a stunning place to enjoy the transforming seasonal colors. It's said the region's maple trees were planted by 17th-century monks.

How to Get There

Getting to Korankei can be a little challenging and will require bus and train transfers, but it's worth the effort.

There are several options from Nagoya . The most direct path is to take a train from Meitetsu Nagoya Station towards Toyohashi and get off at Higashi Okazaki Station. From here take the Meitetsu Korankai Bus to Korankei . The bus takes a little over an hour from Higashi Okazaki. You can get to Nagoya from Tokyo Station on the Tokaido-Sanyo Shinkansen.

Magnificent maples

There are over 4,000 maple trees in Korankei Gorge , and every year locals and visitors from all over the country flock to the area in November to enjoy the annual Korankei Maple Festival.

Performances that illuminate the night

As you stroll along the mountainous ravines and through the park, try some of the delicious festival food on offer and keep an eye out for the many traditional performances.

There's taiko drumming along with numerous other events. Each evening during the festival period the trees are illuminated from sunset, giving the area a magical glow that is truly breathtaking.

A truly special place

Due to it being somewhat difficult to access without a car, comparatively few foreign visitors to Japan make it out to the Korankei Maple Festival. This makes it a uniquely local event and one you can't miss if you really want to soak up the culture.
