Summer

Summer is an incredible time to discover the hidden gems of Japan's natural beauty, especially blooming flowers that are a sight to behold. Explore the glorious scenery and surroundings while witnessing the array of colorful flowers that contrast with the blue summer sky!

Below are a couple of highlighted places you can visit to embrace such natural beauty in summer.

<h7>Spectacular & Aromatic Lavender Fields: Furano, Hokkaido </h7>

Summer

Furano is Japan's home for picturesque rolling fields of lavender and other beautiful summer flowers. Located in the center of Hokkaido, the nearest airport is in Asahikawa about one hour away. Asahikawa Airport is a quick 90 minute flight from Tokyo and is well worth the journey.

Furano's spectacular lavender fields attract large numbers of domestic and international visitors to the region every summer. There are many splendid flower fields across Furano. A popular spot is Tomita Farm, located within walking distance from the lavender train station. The artistry of the lavender and flower fields are wonderfully augmented with the contrasting elegance of the Tokachi mountain range as a backdrop.

Apart from the celebrated beauty and color on display at the farm, there are also cafes and shops that sell a wide range of lavender related goods. Do not miss out in tasting a "Lavender soft cone."

Tomita Farm's second lavender field, Lavender East is located about 3 miles from Tomita and is famous for being the largest lavender field in Japan. Visitors can enjoy the spectacular view from the observation deck or explore the fields with a fun ride on the "Lavender Bus".

If you are keen to experience a natural hot spring, stop by Highland Furano, located 8 miles south from Tomita Farm. Admire stunning purple lavender fields from the Open-air Bath. The place provides accommodation both in Japanese and western style rooms, and the restaurant serves a variety of dishes using local fresh ingredients.

<h7>Bright Sunflower Fields: Akeno, Yamanashi Prefecture</h7>

Summer

Another hidden gem of summer is in the Akeno area of the Yamanashi prefecture, providing visitors a charming view of bright yellow sunflowers.

Akeno is famous as the place for having the longest daylight in Japan, and is located about 90 miles away from Tokyo. It can be reached by direct express bus that operates from Shinjyuku Bus terminal in central Tokyo and takes 2.5 hours.

The stunning sunflower fields are truly magnificent and a riveting sight to be seen during the summer season. About 600,000 sunflowers bloom in one place with a 360-degree view against Mt. Fuji and the South Alps as a backdrop, creating a spectacular vista.

Considered to be one of most renowned sunflower festivals in Japan, the annual Akeno Sunflower festival is held from late July to mid-August. While visiting, you can also enjoy the "local shop" exhibition. Sunflower related products are also available at the local markets.
