Getting Info on Train Times, Prices and Booking
A great new tool for enjoying a train trip in Japan is JR East’s Real-Time Route Search. This search engine allows you to look for trains anywhere in the country, not just JR East’s region. You can search from Point A to Point B by specific time and date, or in a more general manner such as “first train” or “last train.” You receive six possible trains within your time frame with the option to click for six earlier choices or six later ones. You can also click on any route shown and the screen will shift to show details of the trip such as the specific trains by name, where you have to change trains, and how long it takes for the transfer. JR-EAST Train Reservation then allows you to purchase JR East Railway Passes and Point to Point tickets one month in advance.
