Explore Ancient Asuka by Bicycle

Discover idyllic nature, ancient tombs, and everyday life in a rural Nara mountain village

Take a leisurely three-hour cycling tour and let a local expert show you the historical heritage sites of Asuka Village, Nara Prefecture, a cultural center of Japan as early as the sixth century. Admire stunning natural vistas alongside traditional buildings carefully protected for decades under Japan’s Ancient Capitals Preservation Law.

At any season of the year, relish the beautiful, serene landscape that might feel somehow nostalgic. Marvel at spectacular terraced rice fields—among the most impressive in all of Japan—and unravel the secrets of ancient tombs and stone structures dating back some 1,400 years. Witness the place where Japan’s history as a nation began, and the site of one of its ancient capitals. You’ll also have a chance to peep into the everyday life of a typical satoyama settlement—where mountains meet fields and humans have long co-existed with nature. Chat with local residents and let them share the joys of their daily lives with you.

Cycling tours are available year-round from Asuka Station on the Kintetsu Railway Yoshino Line.

Access: From Shin-Osaka Station, take the Midosuji Line train to Tennoji Station (about 25 minutes), then walk to Osaka-Abenobashi Station (about three minutes) and transfer to the Kintetsu Line to Asuka Station (about 40 minutes).
