Toyama Prefecture

Toyama Prefecture’s sankyoson, or dispersed settlement, is a traditional farmland where people and nature have existed in harmony for generations. Surrounded by a sweep of rice fields and embraced by mountains on three sides, Rakudo-An has become a center for regenerative tourism in the area, giving back to the local community and offering visitors a glimpse into the life, culture, and values of the region.

Here, in this timeless rural landscape, layers of culture and spirituality are revealed through encounters with local people and special experiences. Drop in to the weekly practice of a local taiko group as the sound of drums echo over the darkened fields, study tea ceremony in the hotel lobby, or learn calligraphy at a nearby temple.

With three exclusive guest rooms, each highlighting different materials—Paper, Silk, and Soil—Rakudo-An is filled with mingei (folk craft) treasures from preeminent artists like Bernard Leach and Munakata Shiko, along with contemporary art such as the installation by Rei Naito in the hotel’s backyard.

With a mission to protect the dispersed settlement (two percent of all bookings go towards its preservation), Rakudo-An is a place where the spirit of Toyama can be experienced firsthand.
